The Ranche on the Oxhide by Inman tells the adventures of the Thompson family in their new life on the Kansas Frontier shortly after the Civil War. 

This book,originally published in the later half of the 19th century is the boy Scout edition.  This is a fine example of using the history of the State of Kansas in fiction to help children to understand and appreciate the need to study history, even if it is boring at times.
